CNR is doomed February 24, 2006

Fabio Pistella, the non-proliferous scientist parachuted at the presidency of the CNR by Letizia Moratti two years ago, was interviewed last week for the italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
You can find the interview in the site of the Observatory on italian research, www.osservatorio-ricerca.it , along with an answer from members of the observatory which appeared two days thereafter on the same newspaper.
The punchline of Pistella’s interview is that he really means to transform CNR in a real “company”, where directives are given from above on what research to pursue, cutting branches at will if they are deemed “non proliferous”…
Refraining from broadcasting publicly what I think of the whole idea, I wonder whether Pistella, from atop his pile of three scientific publications, is the right person to do the job anyways.

What a stupid thing!
I would like to give some examples of “non proliferous” branches that luckily for mankind in the last millennium nobody has cut, but such examples are too much indeed…
I forgot to add:
not only it is a stupid thing, it is also unethical, and completely disregarding of scientific method…
Dorigo — this is not encouraging news! Just as I was going to ask you about actually returning to Venice and the likelihood of finding scientific work in the area (if you recall, I was high energy physics now doing NASA-related aerospace and systems engineering). Every time I start to look for work in the Veneto (and Italy in general) so I can be back with my wife there, I get fully depressed. This doesn’t help. Argh. ciao, Jeff
