Student initialization May 12, 2006

I like to bring new students to Fermilab. It is always fun to "initialize" them, to show them around, to describe the place, what we do here, the detector, the facilities, everything.

There is something fascinating about showering somebody with a huge amount of information all at once, if they are really interested in what you are teaching them… A trip to the US with somebody who has never visited the place (let alone somebody who has never flown before!) is always entertaining.

And I like to bring the students downtown for a sightseeing tour of Chicago - I usually bring them to the John Hancock tower's 95th floor bar, one gets a clear view of the whole city from there, at 800 feet above ground.

This week I am here with Diego, who is working with me at his Master's thesis. He is applying the Hyperball algorithm to improve the resolution of reconstructed top quarks…. He gave a nice presentation last Wednesday.

Tonight I'd like to show him around a little, but the weather sucks! We have had rain for a while now, and the temperature hit very unseasonable lows this morning. So I think tonight we'll just play some pool somewhere…

Sick May 12, 2006

Yesterday I was sick… Kids bring home tons of viruses from school, and one then has to deal with them.

This spring there appears to be an outbreak of some nasty virus that give you stomach ache and nausea, plus fever, for a day, to disappear thereafter. The problem is that it looks like once you get it, you are likely to get it a second time… At least this I extrapolate, in my total ignorance of microbiology, from talking to other parents!

Being in the US for just a week, I try to cram as many things as possible in the seven days at Fermilab. This time, one day was taken out - I was in bed all day! Luckily today I feel better again… I just hope it is not going to happen a third time!
