Happy for one death ? June 11, 2006

Here is the cover of the next issue of Time:

I am sorry if I cannot join the bandwagon in rejoicing for the death of Zarqawi. It's not my way.

And I must say, to place a red cross on the face of a person executed without trial by a bombing squad is, to my meter of judgement, apology of assassination.

No warning: fine. No trial: of course. No visible attempts to limit the collateral damage, which included at least a three year old girl: well, in the style of "surgery actions" we have come to know.

War is ugly, and you can't make it without staining your hands with red.  But the cover of Time is over the top. It's the kind of "do-it-yourself" justice dear to America two centuries ago. Not what you'd expect from a country that wants to export democracy in the world.

I am sorry but this guy doesn’t deserve any respect. He didn’t deserve a trial. Did Nick Berg get a trial? this guy claimed responsibility for numerous murders. I think we are much better off now that he is dead.

I agree ldubya, he did not deserve much.

We, however, do deserve respect towards our law and towards our moral values.

Violating the rules that we imposed to ourselves is not good. Guantanamo, for instance, may have paid off dividends to US intelligence, but it is a shame.
Even more shameful, and surely even less useful, is torture in Abu Ghraib and the other prisons used by US forces in Iraq.

I beg to differ, there has to be another way.
Cheers,

I belive the main problem is that the Alzarkawi’s corpse has been taken by the militaries to a secret place. They (the mil) have made an’autopsy to the corpse and a DNA TESTS to find if the corpse is that of Alzarkawi. But how they can make the test if they haven’t the dna PREVIUOSLY to Alzarkawi’s death? So If they have the dna PREVIOUSLY HOW THEY GOT IT?

Zerocold, I believe the CIA has DNA samples of most everybody they care about. Taking a DNA sample is not a difficult thing for a spy, an empty glass or a hair may be enough.
We leave our traces wherever we go… finding those traces is not that hard with the right tools.

To celebrate the killing of anyone is to embrace a dark soul as our vision and savior. This country has been fed spoonfuls of fear every single day since 2001 and now it has become a permanent stain. We are all complicit in this vile form of humanity. I agree with you, T., there has to be another way. Au contraire, Idubya, Time Magazine is simply a political tool. It’s true interest is to capitalize on all that it perceives. Once again, Time shrewdly winks a lonely eye at you because they purposefully are respecting al Zarkawi. That cover is ‘pop art’ at it’s best and notice the many different ways in which he is acknowledged world-wide. Another icon for all sides to feed on.

Hi Fred,

I completely agree with your analysis. Time has understood that Al Zarkawi’s face has the potential to become an icon, and happily supports the operation.

Cheers,
T.
