Wine tasting physicists August 22, 2006

At the QCHS conference in the Azores, which I will attend in two weeks, they organized a wine tasting evening. Every attending physicist is encouraged to bring a couple of bottles of precious fluid from their home country, to share tastes and discuss the merit of each wine.

I think it’s a wonderful diversion from the typical dullness of after-session freetime at physics conferences. Of course, the Azores will no doubt offer a lot of stimuli to run away from the conference site, but the socialization of a wine tasting session is probably a very good idea for those like me, who always find themselves ill-at-ease in the company of strangers when attending conferences such as this one, mostly on theoretical developments and hot QGP physics.

So my problem is to decide which wine will represent my country. I am still pondering over the choice, with a preference for the Tocai of the Colli orientali del Friuli (Luisa is a good brand) or a Cartizze of Conegliano. Giovanni, my boss, was suggesting Amarone from Verona, but it is a red wine with some body and we decided it would suffer from the flight, now that I will need to place it in my checked luggage.

We will see. I will no doubt report here about my choice and then about the way it is received…

This morning I left Padola with my family, brought them home in Venice, and headed to PadoVa (funny how my main vacation place and working place have so much of their name in common), to get ready for the start of the new academic year, for an enforced involvement in the CMS experiment, and for the graduation of two more students, plus the struggle which awaits me and the PhD student who will get his title this winter.

But first… I have to put together a talk with the most recent results by CDF and D0 on Standard Model Physics and Higgs boson searches, for the QCHS conference (http://qchs7.ist.utl.pt/) which will be held in the Azores islands from September 1st to 7th. That will be my main task in the next few days… And while I put stuff together, I will try to update my few worthy readers here with the news from the Tevatron.
