Here are  some of the search terms people who ended up here typed in Google.

  • Working with random forests“: I guess this guy is looking for information on classification algorithms. I do have a post on that, but I guess it was not too informative…
  • grad picture hair“: I have no clue what this person was looking for. Since 90% of picture searches in the web are of people looking for sexy ones, I guess I understand which kind of hair we are talking about, but in what sense “grad” ?
  • The mexicans and Oriana Fallaci“: this refers to the late reporter and writer, Oriana Fallaci, who died last Friday. She once expressed her hatred for Mexicans due to the way they treated her once (or so I recall). By the way, Fallaci was a great writer until 20 years ago, then gradually drank up her own brain and became better known for her racist remarks against muslims and catholic fanaticism. I will not miss her.
  • Shifman planar equivalence“: well, welcome here. I have a post which might be of some use for you. Indeed, I put here a writeup of Misha Shifman’s talk at QCHS7 (two weeks ago, at the Azores).
  • I always see the number 333“: this guy has a mystical attack. I have no idea how he could end up here, but maybe the integrated luminosity of a plot about Z decays lured him in my blog!
  • Survivor why 39 days instead of 40“: this guy is evidently ranting about some evil TV broadcaster cuttin one day of programming of his favourite reality show. Get a life, pal!

Top mass prospects at the LHC September 18, 2006

These days I am in the process of giving a look at the latest CMS documents (public notes) on startup physics at LHC and the like. I thus stumbled in a recent note (CMS CR 2006/035) which discusses the accuracy with which the top quark mass will be measured with 1 or 10 inverse femtobarns of CMS data.

Quoting from the abstract:

“Given the big cross section for tt production in proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV, the LHC with its high luminosity will be, among others, a top factory, allowing a precision measurement of the top quark mass. [...] A combined top mass accuracy of O(1 GeV) for 10-20 fb-1 of well-understood CMS data will be feasible.”

So the Tevatron really does have a chance to maintain its supremacy in the top mass measurements through the end of this decade… A 1 GeV error is by now almost given for granted by 2009 for CDF and D0 combined.
