A video-blogging friend of mine (Robert Scoble) is at CERN now, filing his video report. He, me, Steve Chen (co-founder of Youtube) hang out on the same video-blogging email list. I’m still STUNNED at how the HEP community is NOT using the video-blogging medium (still stuck mostly on text-blogging, some picture blogging), which can be syndicated over the mega-maniacal iTunes video-podcast medium. I’ve demo’d this for the SUSY ‘06 (LiveWebCast archive here) & Strings ‘07 conferences. I was working with one of the organizers of Strings ‘07, & we actually got a response from Apple to do an online splash article (on Apple’s front page), about how Technology is changing the way Physics conferences is done (Content/Distribution model). There is some more exciting Technology that is coming online, & I’ve been playing with it (as has Robert Scoble). You can shoot cellphone video (do you have a cellphone w/video Tommaso?), upload it (via email attachment), & it will automatically post to a WordPress (or Blogger) blog. I.e., you can do near-LIVE video-updates from the CMS control room to this blog. The idea of “LIVE text blogging” (e.g., at Cosmicvariance) is old-fashioned, & a disgrace to CERN (whose initiative allowed Tim Berners-Lee to come up with the breakthrough HTTP protocol). Broadband Internet means..VIDEO. Betsy Devine (F. Wilczek’s wife, Princeton Masters deg in Engineering, avid photo/text blogger) sent me an email last December, acknowledging this fact (“power of downloadable video”). I hate to say it, but even the HEP community (as a whole), is not “getting it” in terms of effective use of Technology (e.g., video blogging & other online video solutions). L. Motl was the ONLY blogger (last June ‘07), who was cognizant enough to post embedded Strings ‘07 talk videos (Flash video player, hosted by Blip.tv). P. Woit/NEW turned me away, S. Carroll/CV brushed off my suggestion to video-blog (yrs ago), Bee doesn’t like videos of herself (how can a starlet like her, refuse exposure), etc. If Tommaso can get his cellphone camera going, then at least HE can use the New Technology as part of the CERN/LHC startup. Here’s his chance to “scoop” CV (near-LIVE video updates automatically posted on Quantum Diaries), his arch rival blog.

On the subject of nibbles/eats, I was just at SIGGRAPH 2008

where they set the standard for cuisine. The reception this year was at a Dodgers/Phillies game (note that S. Carroll/CV is a diehard Phillies fan, J. Hewett/SLAC is an eternal Cardinals fan), which had a full wine/beer selection,

Chinese food (! people found that amusing), in addition to the standard ballpark food (Dodger dogs, nacho chips w/Chili, peanuts, popcorn, cotton candy, etc). I went with the latter (more pics here, having already tasted fine cuisine at the Legends Reception (the Filet Mignon was INCREDIBLE!)
