Interesting, how long ago that comment was made! I mean, what happened meanwhile? It seems to me that actually, we are basically in barbarism and decandence at once, with a sprinkle of actual civilization.
It seems he must have a had a great distaste for America, he apparently said one time also:
The Icelanders are the most intelligent people on Europe, “they discovered America and kept quiet about it.”

Well Neil, lots of water went under the bridges, but some aphorisms are still applicable, and some are quite dated.
Hi Olafur, maybe he used the sentence in several ways. I heard it quoted as “America had been discovered several times before Columbus, but had always been hushed up”.
