“… your perspective may be changed by the fact that the Higgs particle you will discover is in reality a matter curve on Riemann surfaces located at the intersection between the GUT model seven-brane and additional seven-branes in the full compactification where the U(1) hypercharge flux is non-vanishing.”

LOL! I love it! The FACT, as they say.

2. Luboš Motl - August 21, 2008

It’s actually not a joke but an insight that will change your life – even your life, Tommaso. 😉 See more details in Cumrun’s talk at strings, described minute-by-minute somewhere at

By the way, Tommaso, was it you, the Italian man who went to Malta?

4. dorigo - August 21, 2008

Hi Lubos,

no, no darn stringy higgs may change my life. My life is determined by more mundane occurrences.

As for the video, well, funny, but I first heard the story in the US and it was not with an italian as main character. It was long ago, you were probably still a good kid back then.

Actually, Lubos, I preferred Alday’s talk on MHV amplitudes, since that’s what my thesis was on, but I was a bit perplexed about all the AdS/CFT stuff because one can talk about operads quite easily without invoking stringy mumbo jumbo. Category theorists do it all the time. But good luck with the fairy hunting. Say, if they don’t find a fairy field, do you think CERN will host a conference for Louise and Carl and Matti and me?

6. Luboš Motl - August 22, 2008

Dear Kea,

sure, CERN will host a conference for you but you must first establish a new CERN without the accelerator mumbo jumbo and without the expensive buildings mumbo jumbo. So it will probably be somewhere in the jungle but I am afraid that you will have to swim over there. 😉

I don’t quite understand how you could “prefer” Alday’s talk without tolerating the AdS/CFT mumbo jumbo because this *whole* talk was about the AdS/CFT, stringy approach to scattering amplitudes. 😉 This is a stringy conference so every talk except for Rovelli’s talk crucially depends on string theory – even though most imbeciles at the N.E.W. blog may fail to figure it out.

What do you mean by a thesis? Have you written a thesis? 😉

7. Kea - August 22, 2008

Oh well, if anything to do with MHV amplitudes and operads has to be AdS/CFT by definition then perhaps I should have mentioned AdS/CFT in my thesis. Would that help get me a job?
