A metronome February 13, 2006

Last Saturday I got a digital metronome. You can see it in the attached picture.

Although I bought it myself, it is a gift from my father for my 40th birthday. My father is terminally ill and cannot move from his home, so he asked me to buy myself a gift on his behalf.

I have never owned a metronome, despite my long career as a musician in my youth. This one is really fancy, since it has a large analogic dial where you can set the speed of the rythm. It gives a choice of two different tones, and they are both warm, not the usual “beeps” of electronic gizmos.

I am now following much more closely the required rythm of Beethoven’s “patetica”. Thanks dad!

No jetlag February 6, 2006

Last week I proved to myself for the second time that I do not suffer any jet-lag if I stay in the US for less than three straight days. I left on Wednesday morning and got back into a plane on Friday evening, and by the time I was back home, on Saturday at noon, I was feeling no discomfort from sleep deprivation. I slept comfortably on Saturday night (well, the alcohol I had during the party must have helped), and the same last night.

Since two days at Fermilab are just as productive as a week (I usually manage to pack in two days all that I need to do and every meeting I need to attend), I think I will have more of these 2-day trips in the future. They are less expensive to the INFN and less stressful to me.

The only problem is that I need to buy two tickets at a time: they charge you much more if you do not stay over a weekend, so you have to sidestep that by crossing two tickets. The Venice-Munich-Chicago ticket for February 1st has a return on March 12th, and the return Chicago-Munich-Venice on February 4th has a return on March 6th…..
